The maelstrom of executive orders and announcements introduced by the incoming Trump administration includes Stargate, a $500bn joint venture between OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank described by the new president as ‘the largest AI infrastructure project in history’.

The initiative aims to supercharge America’s competitive AI advantage by rapidly scaling its network of high powered data centres. The announcement followed an executive order designed to encourage further investment by scrapping AI safety standards and content watermarking put in place by Joe Biden.

Although questioned by Elon Musk, who suggests the partners ‘don’t actually have the money’ to meet their stated commitments, the venture, even if only partially fulfilled, promises to push the US economy’s AI firepower even further beyond those its competitors.
